Cottage Grove races against top contenders at LCC

Cottage Grove traveled to Lane Community College (LCC) with 40 other schools for some exciting racing with top contenders from all classifications. The course consisted of two loops; with the teams starting on the soccer field, looping around the campus’ baseball field and ponds twice to then finish on the infamous LCC blue track.

North Douglas snaps losing streak to Days Creek

A battle of top 10 teams took place over the past week between fourth-ranked North Douglas and seventh-ranked Days Creek. In the past five matchups with the Wolves from Days Creek, North Douglas has a 1-4 record. A few games into the season North Douglas had to pause volleyball activity because of COVID-19 contact tracing but the Warriors are looking sharp early on this season, only losing one set in their first four games.

Creswell trounces Central Linn, moves to 2-0

The Bulldogs saw their first game in two weeks after a COVID-19 breakout at Coquille High School forced the Red Devils to cancel all athletic activities. Creswell hosted the winless Central Linn Cobras this past Friday to see a second Bulldog victory this season.

Lions wrangled by Cowboys

The Lions dropped the game 32-7 in their first game in front of a home crowd in two years. The game started out with challenges for both teams.

Elkton outmanned against Powers

Elkton squared off against Powers for the first time in the regular season since 2017. Powers had crushed their first opponent Prospect Charter 39-6 while Elkton had also won their first game against rival North Douglas, setting up an early match-up of the unbeaten teams.

Lady Lions handle North Valley with ease

From beginning to end, the Lions had their way against the Knights. Led by senior Gracie Arnold, Cottage Grove snagged a 3-0 win in their first game in front of home fans in some time.

CGXC races at Stayton

Cottage Grove traveled to Stayton over the weekend and competed against 15 other teams including perennial powerhouse Philomath. Saturday had perfect conditions with the sun out and the temperature keeping at a comfortable, race-conducive level.

Creswell volleyball faces top opponents

Top-tier programs in 3A volleyball took the court at Creswell high school this past week. The Highlanders from Burns made the long trip over the mountain and the Sutherlin Bulldogs, a former conference foe to Creswell, got ready to face each other in a battle of the highly competitive programs.

CG cross country pivots race due to smoke

Some wild events took place on Saturday ahead of the first cross country meet for Cottage Grove. The first meet for the Lions was supposed to take place at Marist High School, but according to OSAA health standards, no athletic events can take place with an AQI over 100.

Elks and Warriors re-spark rivalry

Elkton and North Douglas restarted their rivalry for the first time since 2019, the last time both programs were in the same division. Over the past eight years, North Douglas has had a winning record over Elkton, but the Elks had some positive momentum coming off last week’s jamboree and were ready for Friday night’s game.

Elkton was the only team last year in the surrounding area to start their six-man football campaign and this year they have been followed by former league-mates North Douglas and Yoncalla as they both joined six-man leagues.

Crowd gives new energy to the Prefontaine Classic

The newly renovated Hayward Field welcomed the biggest crowd since its new opening. It was the first meet after the Tokyo Olympics and had a plethora of star-studded athletes making their return to the Diamond League circuit post the Olympics. Along with the return of Sha’Carri Richardson to the women’s 100m race after being left off the USA Olympic roster, Noah Lyles returned in the men’s 200m looking to bounce back after a tough Olympics.
