The Creswell wrestling and basketball teams are dealing with separate COVID-19 situations, but all teams remain in the same boat in how to deal with the fluid situations and how to keep their teams prepared for what is ahead.

Lady Lions hooked against Marshfield

The Lady Lions basketball team squared off against their toughest opponent of the season on Jan. 14 as the fifth-ranked Marshfield Pirates made their way to town. The Pirates were looking to continue their eight-game winning streak as the Lions were trying to snap a two-game skid. Marshfield’s 1-3-1 defense caused issues for Cottage Grove’s offense who couldn’t keep pace with the Pirates offensive output as the visitors ultimately kept their winning streak alive and came away with a 53-31 victory.

The most recent matchup between the Cottage Grove and Creswell girls basketball teams saw an almost identical finish to a season ago. In the last three matchups between both schools, the average margin of victory has been only four points. This year the Lady Lions were able to etch out another close victory against the Bulldogs in a 47-43 win.

Lion boys get square with Bulldogs

For the first time since the 2015-16 season, the Cottage Grove Lions boys basketball team has taken down their close rival to the north — the Creswell Bulldogs — by winning 60-42. Now in the past four meetings between the schools each team has won two games apiece. Cottage Grove’s Jayden Cameron led all scorers with 22 points, and teammate Carter Bascue added 17. Caleb Lee led Creswell in scoring with 15 points and Bulldog teammate AJ Hodge added 8 points of his own.

Lions basketball deal with illness and injuries over winter break

With high school students on winter break, both the Cottage Grove boys and girls basketball teams were each scheduled to participate in tournaments spanning Dec. 28-30. The Lady Lions were slated to play three games at Stayton in the SCTC Holiday Classic while the Lion boys were preparing to travel over to Sisters to participate in the Sister Holiday Shootout.

Bulldog boys wallop Toledo

The Bulldog boys basketball team is going to see their winning streak continue into the new year after they picked up another win in dominant fashion over a good Toledo program 72-42. Creswell outscored the Boomers in every quarter of the game and are now averaging over 71 points per game during their win streak and holding their opponents to just under 40 points.

Creswell girls back on winning side against Toledo

In each of their previous three wins, the Creswell girls basketball team scored 54 or 55 points against their opponents. But against Toledo, the Bulldogs well exceeded that number scoring nearly 70 and getting the 69-28 win over the visiting Boomers securing a winning record (4-3) before their next game on Jan. 4 against Junction City.

What the OSAA league changes mean for local teams

Starting in the fall of 2022 the Sky-Em league where Cottage Grove currently plays and the Mountain Valley Conference that Creswell is a part of will look a little differently for the next four years going into 2026.

Lion boys pick up two wins at Seaside tournament

Last week the Cottage Grove basketball team traveled up to Seaside for an eight-team tournament that featured teams from both Oregon and Washington. The tournament expanded over Dec. 16-18 and saw the Lions go 2-1 in three games. After losing a close game to the host school Seaside 56-50 on the first night, Cottage Grove rallied for two wins against Elma (Washington) 70-67 and Newport 72-53.

Sutherlin outlasts Bulldog girls

Prior to their meeting with Sutherlin, the Creswell girls basketball team was riding a small win streak of three in a row and scoring over 50 points per game in each win. The Bulldogs traded punches with Sutherlin in the first half of their contest, but the visitors proved why they are a top contender for a state championship as they ultimately defeated Creswell 58-41.

After losing a hard-fought game to Sisters on Dec. 14 the Lady Lions were able to rally and earn two wins out of three games at the Seaside Holiday Classic defeating Rochester (a school in Washington) and Seaside to finish third overall at the tournament.

Creswell boys take first place at Bulldog Invitational

The Creswell boys basketball team mojo is at an all-time high right now after taking first place in their home tournament ‘the Bulldog Invitational’ with wins against Monroe (77-42) and Siuslaw (64-58) on back-to-back nights. Also surpassing the best program start in nearly a decade in winning their first seven games in a row beating the previous mark of six and earning a top-four ranking in the state.

Bulldog boys chop down Loggers

The early part of the season could not be going better for the Creswell’s boys basketball team. The Bulldogs faced some adversity against Elmira on Thursday, Dec.9 with players getting into foul trouble, but still picked up a double-digit win 54-42 over the Falcons. The next day, the boys left no doubt on the road against Scio earning a big 67-27 win and having the program’s first undefeated start since 2013.

On Tuesday, Dec. 7 the Lady Lions basketball team was able to rally for a comeback win on the road against Pleasant Hill 40-28. The next game would see Cottage Grove’s comeback bid fall just short against North Valley losing 42-40.

After having the game on Dec. 9 canceled against Elmira due to COVID-19 positives within the Falcons program. The Creswell girls basketball team used that extra time to find the spark they were looking for on offense as they beat Scio on the road 54-30 for their first win of the season.

Lion Boys shackle visiting Knights

Following their 58-72 loss at Pleasant Hill, the Lion boys basketball team was ready to focus their energy on their first home game of the season against North Valley. Cottage Grove outscored North Valley in all quarters of the game, getting back on the winning side, beating the Knights 72-46.

Creswell girls offense looking for spark

In the first half of the Creswell girls game against Douglas, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 23-13 lead and has since seen their offense go cold in the following six quarters scoring a total of 45 points. Emme Whitson was the go-to scorer for Creswell getting 16 points in their second loss this season to North Bend 50-29.

Lion Boys crush Mustangs in season opener

Jayden Cameron, Brennen Murphy and Carter Bascue led the team in scoring as Lions held the Mustangs to a total of two points in the opening quarter and also forced 10 turnovers. Cottage Grove was able to capitalize on Hidden Valley’s mistakes to jump out to a 20-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Creswell boys’ defense is leading to offense

For Head Coach Jesse Thomas and the Creswell boys basketball team, the start to their season could not be more ideal. In the first week of the season, the Bulldogs picked up wins against Douglas and North Bend to start their season 2-0. Defense has been a heavy focus for coach Thomas and his players this season as the team has only given up a combined 36 points per game in their first two contests.

Over the past two years, the North Douglas Boys Basketball team lost only two games in the Skyline league going a combined 17-2. The exciting part is The Warriors return almost everyone from last season after going 7-4 overall and getting a taste of post-season play.

Elkton Girls newcomers have chance to grow

The Elkton girls basketball program and second-year Head Coach Noah Miller will look to continue a positive trend coming into this season. Since 2013, the Elks have not gotten less than a third-place finish in their league. Last season, the girls team only had two seniors with the rest of the team being a mix of juniors and sophomores and still going 4-1 in five league games also making it to the 1A state tournament.

Underclassmen to lead Elk Boys Basketball

Similar to many teams across the state, the Elkton Boys Basketball team wished their season would have been longer as the team started to hit their stride. The Elks won three of their last four games with an average margin of victory of over 13 points in those wins.

Lady Warriors looking for a fourth consecutive league title

Since 2014, North Douglas Warriors girls basketball have torn through their Skyline league opponents by winning six out of the last seven league titles. Coming into the 2021/22 season the Lady Warriors will be in pursuit of a fourth consecutive league title.

Creswell Girls look to grow from last year

Near the end of the shortened season last year, the Creswell girls basketball team really started to click winning their last three out of four games. In those three victories, Creswell scored just over 50 points per game while holding their opponents to 20 points per game. The good news is, everyone for Creswell is returning for this season in 2021/22 and has fifth-year Head Coach Tyler Hollingsworth excited to keep building on what the team started to put together at the end of last year.

Bulldog Boys excited for a full season

Two years ago, Creswell boys basketball was able to finish out their state tournament as they finished third just before all athletes were shut down due to COVID-19. The team from that season was predominantly seniors and didn’t include virtually anyone on this current roster. Last year, the Bulldogs had two seniors for the shortened season with the majority of the group being sophomores.

Lady Lions building on past success

Over the past two seasons, the Cottage Grove girls basketball program has been dominant over the Sky-Em league losing one league game over that span and earning two league titles. But despite the success in league, the girls have a chip on their shoulder heading into this season wanting more success in the postseason after their playoffs were cut short because of COVID-19 in 2020 and losing to Valley Catholic last season.

Lion Boys will lean on returners

Coming in for his fourth year as head coach, Hutchison has a lot to be excited about ahead of the 2021/22 season and the experience Hutchison alluded to includes returning four out of their five starters from a season ago. Seniors Jayden Cameron, Ty Kishen, and Juniors Brennen Murphy, Carter Bascue, Brayden Crump highlight the returners coming back with for this year.

CG volleyball enjoys successful season

Plenty of excitement was felt for the Cottage Grove volleyball team this season. The Lions were able to advance to the quarterfinals, win the Sky-Em league for the first time since 2018, while five of the six starters were named to a conference selection. Second year Head Coach Abby Ladd was also named Sky-Em coach of the year.

2021 Warriors volleyball make history

In the annual city-wide garage sale held in Drain Oregon every August, North Douglas Head Coach Emily Reed joked with another coach that she just held her first practice with her state championship volleyball team. The Warriors have been no stranger to recent success after finishing third in the state tournament in 2015, second in 2016, fourth in 2017, and fifth in 2018.

Lions volleyball bounced by Valley Catholic in quarterfinals

Sixth seed Cottage Grove traveled to third seed Valley Catholic last Tuesday Nov. 2 after the Lions bounced Tillamook in the first round of the playoffs. The Lions were able to win the first set but Valley Catholic went on to win the next three sets as The Valiants won in four sets over Cottage Grove ending the Lions season.

Creswell takes home 4th place and Sportsmanship trophy

Both elation and agony moved through the Creswell volleyball team during the past weekend. The Bulldogs fought their way through two tough five-set matches against Sutherlin and Catlin Gabel. While neither result favored Creswell, they were still able to take home a fourth-place trophy and the Sportsmanship trophy as their season has officially come to an end.

The fifth-seeded North Douglas Warriors volleyball team capped off an historic season with a win over the second seed St. Paul Buckaroos in the state title game Saturday evening a Ridgeview High school, bringing home the first state title in program history.

Monroe’s second half propels them over Creswell on senior night

In the first half, the Bulldogs limited Ballard’s production and the Monroe offense as a whole, holding them to only six points. But after the halftime break, the Dragons were able to play their way back into the game scoring 24 points in the second half to squeeze out a victory 30-29 over Creswell on senior night.

Highlanders run past Lions on homecoming

Cottage Grove welcomed the North Eugene Highlanders for the season finale of Lions football. The Highlanders were looking to make a push for a state playoff birth and the Lions were looking to go out on a high note. North Eugene prevailed over Cottage Grove earning a 42-14 win and a playoff spot.

Creswell volleyball advances past Vale

The Creswell volleyball team defeated conference rival Harrisburg for the third time this season handling them in a 3-0 victory before moving on to play Vale. The Vale Vikings made over a six-hour bus ride to Creswell looking to knock off the Bulldogs on the road. But Creswell would build off their big win earlier in the week winning comfortably 3-0 to end Vale’s tournament run.

Lions volleyball sends Cheesemakers home

After the emotional roller coaster of the Lions volleyball team beating Siuslaw in a riveting five-set match, Cottage Grove aimed their sights on the visiting Tillamook Cheesemakers for the first round of playoffs. Tillamook’s front line would push the Lions in some spots but the experienced Cottage Grove group would prove to be too much and earn a four-set victory moving onto the next round.

The North Douglas Warriors completed their pursuit of perfection last Saturday, achieving a 14-0 record in league play and sweeping their two opponents in the Skyline Conference tournament.

Marist defeats Lions in first game back since pause

Top-five-ranked Marist rolled into town fresh off of a tough loss against another top 4A team in the state, Cascade. The Spartans’ offense has been rolling this season as they average over 45 points per game and continued their stout attack against the Lions last Thursday. Marist would get back on the winning side, however, as they rolled past Cottage Grove 56-16.

Oakland spoils Creswell homecoming

North Valley is a 4A school and plays two divisions higher than Creswell – which plays football at 2A – so despite having the loss, Creswell still ranked in the top five before Friday night’s game. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they haven’t been able to beat Oakland since joining their league in 2018, and Friday night Oakland’s winning streak against Creswell would continue.

In the Lions’ first game against Elmira, Cottage Grove crushed the Falcons to the tune of 8-0 and their most recent game saw a similar triumph. The Lions downed Elmira in a 5-0 win and would continue their dominance against Sky-Em league opponents and have yet to suffer a loss in league play.

The Billies took it to the Bulldogs in the first two sets as they jumped out to a victory, but Creswell would continue to battle as they came back from that 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 in five sets.

Cottage Grove’s cross country team traveled to Philomath on Saturday to face off against some of the top programs in the 4A classification. Defending state champion Siuslaw and top contender Philomath were in attendance as the boys varsity team took third behind those two teams while the boys junior varsity team finished first.

Lions stomp Tigers, Spartans 4-0 in league play

Last season, the Lions split the season series with the Tigers, winning one game in four sets and losing the other in five sets. All signs pointed to this being a close contest, but Cottage Grove would have other plans. The Cottage Grove fans traveled really well and would watch their Lions put on a serving clinic in their 3-0 victory over Junction City strengthening their chances at a league title.

Elkton defense stalls Yoncalla offense

Six-man football is notorious for high-scoring games, though the first half of the Elkton and Yoncalla game last Friday was a defensive battle as the Yoncalla Eagles took a 2-0 lead into halftime. Elkton, however, came to life in the second half as they scored 21 unanswered to earn the victory.

Cottage Grove traveled to Lane Community College (LCC) with 40 other schools for some exciting racing with top contenders from all classifications. The course consisted of two loops; with the teams starting on the soccer field, looping around the campus’ baseball field and ponds twice to then finish on the infamous LCC blue track.

North Douglas snaps losing streak to Days Creek

A battle of top 10 teams took place over the past week between fourth-ranked North Douglas and seventh-ranked Days Creek. In the past five matchups with the Wolves from Days Creek, North Douglas has a 1-4 record. A few games into the season North Douglas had to pause volleyball activity because of COVID-19 contact tracing but the Warriors are looking sharp early on this season, only losing one set in their first four games.

The Bulldogs saw their first game in two weeks after a COVID-19 breakout at Coquille High School forced the Red Devils to cancel all athletic activities. Creswell hosted the winless Central Linn Cobras this past Friday to see a second Bulldog victory this season.
