Herbert D. "Herbie" Crump, 84, of Cottage Grove died May 9, 2013 from cancer.
He was born March 26, 1929 in Heppner, Oregon to Henry S. and Della Flossie (Morthup) Crump.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force. On Jan. 2, 1981 in Cottage Grove, he and Lavonnia Adams were married.
Herbert worked for Weyerhaeuser for 26 years as a Diesel Mechanic and Chain Saw Mechanic. He owned Valley Trader, a second hand store, and a tree climbing business. He also worked in the Mercury Mines and as a logger, plumber and electrician.
He did some tinkering, enjoyed the coast, was a volunteer bus driver for the senior center and South lane Wheels. He enjoyed fishing, especially Alaska and the Oregon Coast, built model airplanes, did entries in parades, square dancing and line dancing. Barbecues and family gatherings were important to him. He was a member of the Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Crump of Cottage Grove, five sons, Ronald Crump of Payette, Idaho, Bruce Crump and wife, Joyce, of Cottage Grove, Don Smith and wife, Tami, of Leaburg, Ken Smith of Cottage Grove and Ronald Smith of Springfield, two daughters, Shirley Fay and husband, Mike, of Portland and Bonnie Ann Martin and husband, Gary, of Cottage Grove, 21 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carrie Ernest, and son, Ken Crump.
A celebration of life will be held May 18 at 1 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove with a potluck following.
