A group of teenagers walking by the Willamette River Wednesday discovered the body of a woman believed to be a local transient.
According to Corporal Scott Shepherd, a group of teenagers approached the bus garage in an agitated state at Lincoln Middle School shortly after 3:15 p.m. Wednesday to state that they had discovered a body partially submerged in the river. Police and medical examiners arrived to find that employees had partially removed the woman from the river. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Shepherd said the woman was carrying a backpack and plastic bag and other equipment that would typically be carried by a transient. There was no sign of a struggle, Shepherd said, and there was no evidence that the woman or others had been camping in that spot.
On Wednesday evening, Cottage Grove Police began receiving reports about a local transient callers believed to be the woman discovered in the river after the name of Danielle Marie Swanson, 38, was leaked by a television news station. Swanson is known to police as someone with a history of drug and alcohol abuse. An autopsy on Friday determined that the woman found in the Willamette was indeed Swanson, though no more information was available regarding the cause of her death.
