The last time Cottage Grove Mayor Tom Munroe planned a cleanup effort downtown, he was left out in the cold.

“It was just me,” Munroe said of that morning, when wintry weather kept the Mayor’s help elsewhere.

Not so on Friday morning, when a crew of about 50 volunteers showed up at All-America City Square to help ‘Clean up the Town with Tom.” For three hours under skies that threatened rain, community members picked up trash, pulled weeds and cleared cracks in the sidewalk of their annual mossy accumulation.

“It’s a great way to launch the tourist season and make downtown beautiful,” said Cottage Grove Community Services Director Pete Barrell while lugging a bag of trash away from the area. Barrell said Main Street’s 28 flowerpots had also been removed for refurbishing and to be replanted.
