Charter planning big digital upgrade

The giant satellite dish behind Charter Cable’s Cottage Grove headquarters is about to disappear. In its place will be the makings of a major upgrade in the services the company offers here.

Charter spokesman Jack Hardy said the company is following a mandate to convert all its offerings to digital systems and is on track to make that conversion in Cottage Grove and Creswell by the end of this year.

“It’s still in the final stages of construction,” Hardy said of the upgrade, which ramped up two weeks ago with the installation of an “outside head-in” at Charter’s Cottage Grove headquarters, according to local representative Randy Weston. The prefabricated building will house the electrical components the company needs to tie into the fiber optics backbone installed here by the City of Cottage Grove and other groups, a backbone that connects Eugene and Creswell to Cottage Grove and then on to Roseburg.
