To date, Cottage Grove area Habitat for Humanity has built 11 homes for those who need them in the area. But they’ve never made one quite like this.

On a recent tour, volunteer James Burke, who describes himself as the “manager by default” of the construction that’s been happening off Harvey Lane since May, gave the Sentinel a glimpse of a different kind of Habitat house.

“This house is a bit unusual for Habitat,” Burke said. “We normally don’t do anything this elaborate. We have plans for basic housing, for box-style affordable homes, but this has a lot of special features that have the potential to save the family a lot of money on their energy bills.”

Burke pointed out the 18 inches of insulation blown into the home’s ceiling and floor, in addition to its walls. He described how the house is built incredibly airtight and elaborated on the blower test that will be used to suck air out of the house to check for and remedy any air leaks. There will be an air exchange system to bring fresh air into such an enclosed space, Burke said, and a ductless heating system that should minimize heat loss in the winter.

“The family should be able to save about $75-$100 a month if we do it right,” he said.
