Mercury is indeed moving from the former site of the Black Butte Mine to the Coast Fork of the Willamette River and on to Cottage Grove Lake, says a representative of the Environmental Protection Agency, who added that the agency is still exploring how that mercury transforms to become dangerous to local fish and animal populations.
In 2010, the former mercury mine located south of Cottage Grove was placed on the EPA’s Superfund list of toxic sites designated for federal cleanup. At the time, the agency sought publication on the Superfund list after determination was made that the owners of the mine property lacked the resources to clean up the site.
