The 67th annual two-day Cottage Grove rodeo last weekend was a more “mellow” event, and thus more enjoyable for families, according to Cottage Grove Riding Club President Kelli Fisher. The attendance was about 1500, which did not include military, law enforcement and rodeo personnel and their families. Similar to last year, both sides of the arena were almost full. The difference according to Fisher was the lack of drunkenness or rowdiness that has sometimes occurred in the past.

“The beer sales were way down,” Fisher said. “The crowd was nice to be around and people stayed later with their kids. It was kind of nice to have the Saturday night mellow and a really family-oriented rodeo this year, which is really what we have been aiming for all along with our club…to be more community and family-oriented.”

Along with the usual attractions of bareback, bull riding and cow tying, with about 70 cowboys and cowgirls competing each night, the cowhide race was again the most entertaining event. This year the team of Lisa Laroe and Scott Fergason won the race where one member of the team jumps on the cowhide and rides it the length of the arena. The winning duo split a $1200 pot. Third place went to two brave teenage girls.
