Open-carry questioned

Posted: Tuesday, Jul 16th, 2013

Its not unusual to see Chris Hampton walking around the streets and sidewalks of Cottage Grove. Its also not unusual to see the Glock handgun Hampton habitually carries in a holster strapped to his shoulder.

If you see me around town, Im probably open-carrying, Hampton said. I carry everywhere its legal, though not everywhere is.

Hampton said he got his license to carry a concealed weapon last November during the lead-up to the presidential election amid talk that President Barack Obama may attempt to limit the availability of firearms during his second term. He added that these days the world seems a little more desperate than in the past.

I like being able to choose how I protect myself and my family, he said. You see more cases of acts of desperation in the news these days than ever, and if it ever happens I want to be able to protect myself or otherwise diffuse the situation.

Since getting a license to carry a concealed weapon, Hampton said he often spends a few hours a day studying the laws that govern where he can or cannot carry a gun, openly or otherwise. Its a subject that came up last week at the Cottage Grove Library, where Hampton had brought his young son for a youth-themed event.
