Volleyball 'exploding' in Cottage Grove

Taking on more work for the same pay is not what most people want to do, but CGHS athletic director Dave Presley was all smiles on the first day of the girls’ summer volleyball camp. Based on the turnout Monday, Presley thinks CGHS may field more volleyball teams this fall than any other high school in the state of Oregon. He envisions two freshmen teams, two junior varsity and one varsity team. He says the Sky-Em athletic directors have no objections to the added teams.

Lions’ head coach Kendra Anderson and her assistants welcomed over 100 girls for the annual volleyball camp. Anderson said the century mark number included about 25 high school volleyball players who were on hand to help the 75 third through ninth-grade campers.

“Volleyball is just exploding right now,” said Presley. “We will need to find more coaches. We have kids who are really enthusiastic. The last thing we want to do is do any cutting. It’s the right thing to do to keep them involved in these school activities, so we’re going to keep everybody engaged. It will be good for kids and high school volleyball to develop that talent. You never know who is going to surface.”
