Boys tuning up for league tournament this weekend

The Division One summer league baseball season is already coming to an end. This weekend the Cottage Grove Lions team, whose starters should all be on the varsity team next season, will travel to Elmira for the end-of-the-season three-day single elimination tournament.

Last week the Lions played only one game, that being at home against North Douglas. The Lions 10-runned the Warriors in five innings in the 12-1 victory at Kelly Field.

Junior Zach Thomason led the Lions at the plate and on the mound. Thomason, who has been the top starter for the CG boys this spring, allowed one run and struck out seven Warriors in five innings. He also helped his own cause with a bases-loaded double to drive in three runs.

Austin Gordon also continued his hot hitting for the Lions and Kwan Thithong (see photo) rocketed a ball into deep center field for a triple in the win.

A bright note for the Lions was the return of senior Brody Gipson, who was possibly facing arm surgery. Instead, he has been cleared to play and should help the Lions in the field at second base and also in their hitting attack.

The 8-4 Lions' opponent on Friday is yet to be determined.
