Bob Wolcott of Portland’s Velo Racing Team said he spent much of Sunday’s Oregon Gran Fondo thinking a singular thought:

“For most of the race, all I could think about was, ‘What am I going to eat when I get through with this ride?’” Wolcott said.

At 117 miles, riders of the Fondo, which translates roughly to ‘big ride’ in Italian, could be forgiven for working up an appetite. And several Cottage Grove businesses, including the Axe & Fiddle and Backstage Bakery, were more than happy to serve up the carbs and protein that would help the more than 400 participants in three separate race distances recover from the morning’s workout.

For Velo, a team composed of over 20 Portland-area riders, the Fondo provided an opportunity for team togetherness.

“We typically do races that are 40 or 50 miles, so a long ride like this is a good way to pull the team together,” Wolcott said. “It was an epic ride, some of it through beautiful covered forest. The course didn’t open up until the last 30 or so miles, and that’s when the heat really started beating down on us.”
