CG mayor impressed with Dalai Lama's message

For the most part, being the mayor of Cottage Grove is a pretty thankless job, but for Tom Munroe last week he was the beneficiary of one of the few perks of the position.

Munroe and his wife Elaine were two of only 200 people who received a free invitation to attend a luncheon with the Dalai Lama. Later in the afternoon he enjoyed a ringside seat midst a throng of 11,000, who gathered to hear the 77-year old Tibetan monk speak about “The Path to Peace and Happiness in a Global Society."

Gyatso is the 14th Dalai Lama and one of the most popular spiritual, intellectual and cultural figures in the world. Getting him to come to Eugene was the result of a decade-long process. In keeping with Gyatso’s vision of world peace, The Eugene Sakya Center is attempting to raise $3.5 million to complete in the next two years a building complex in Eugene called the Palmo Peace Center.

“He didn’t seem like a religious man,” Munroe said. “He was more like a philosopher.

It was very enlightening. He was quite surprising. You’d think he would be more austere, but he was a common man with a good mind. He had a lot of philosophy behind him.
