Friday's Ciochetti track meet should be full of top competition

Posted: Wednesday, May 8th, 2013

The 4 x 400 relay with freshman Chelsea Bottorff and Kristine Dunn should be a real crowd pleaser.

Some members of the Cottage Grove boys and girls’ track team traveled to the Grants Pass Invitational for some good competition last Saturday. A few Lions recorded some good marks, but it didn’t go as well as some of the athletes would have liked.

“Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate very well,” said Lions head coach Ricky Knutson.” It was hot and pretty windy.”

For example, freshman Breanna Wright, who took second in the 3000, ran only a 10:55.

“It ( the weather) was pretty brutal,” Knutson reiterated.

A big race was the girls’ 400 meters, where Kristine Dunn, who had the top time in the state at any classification, was challenged by juniors Venessa and Kerissa D’Arpino, twin sisters from North Valley.

The sisters not only finished 1-2 in the 100 and 200 meters, they repeated that feat in the 400. In so doing, Venessa D’Arpino set a new 4A state record with a time of 55.81, while her sister Kerissa ran a 56.24, which is the third-fastest time in 4A state history.

Dunn finished fourth in the race in a time of 57.71, her second fastest time ever in that event.
