Recent warm, dry and windy weather has many in Cottage Grove on early alert for the sights, sounds and smells of summer. Unfortunately, the smell of smoke was one early arrival.

While many took to area waterways to beat temperatures close to record highs, firefighters with South Lane County Fire & Rescue fought separate blazes on Cottage-Grove Lorane Highway and off London Road Saturday afternoon, according to Shift Commander Joe Raade. Similar fires in the area prompted a meeting Saturday evening that led to a ban on all outdoor burning, a ban that will likely stretch into October. The ban is typically not placed into effect until mid-June and is about 45 days early.

Raade said a windstorm that began at about 1 p.m. Saturday brought down power lines near CG/Lorane Highway. Crews responded to quickly contain the grass fires that flared up due to the sparking lines.
