Esther Mae Mathis, 89, of Cottage Grove passed away April 12, 2013 of age related causes.
She was born March 29, 1924 in Lakeport, Calif. to Christian C. and Grace (Phelps) Van Gorkom.
Esther graduated from Campbell High School in Campbell, Calif. and formerly resided in Concord, Calif. She did daycare in her home for much of her adult life. Esther was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church for 42 years. Her church and Christian faith were the center of her life. She loved kids and taught Sunday school from the age of 18 to 70. She was an avid rock hounder, superb seamstress and loved birds and gardening. She grew orchids and many kinds of home grown tomatoes. She loved the ocean and the Oregon Coast.
On Nov. 6, 1943 in San Jose, Calif., she and Richard Allen Mathis were married. They celebrated 69 years of marriage this year.
Survivors include her husband, two sons, David Mathis and wife, Sally, of Saratoga, Calif. and Donl Mathis of San Jose, Calif., two daughters, Joyce Higgins and husband, John, of Pleasant Hill, Calif. and Sheryl Lorenzen and husband, Scott, of Cottage Grove, four brothers, Harold Van Gorkom of Reedly, Calif., Roy Van Gorkom of Yakima, Wash., Paul Van Gorkom of Oroville, Calif., and Bob Van Gorkom of Mariposa, Calif., three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial will be held at First Baptist Church in Cottage Grove on Thursday, April 25, at 2:30 p.m.
