Boys and girls shine at J.C. and Marist

Posted: Tuesday, Apr 9th, 2013

Photos by Jerry Thompson Lion freshman Mario Mootz had a breakthrough in the 800 with a time of 2:09.5.

A sweep over Junction City and Sisters on Thursday at Junction City was just the start of good things to come for both the Cottage Grove boys and girls’ track squads. Both teams also competed well at the Marist Invitational on Saturday against 11 other teams, eight of them from a higher classification.

The boys won six events on the Tigers' home track, and only two of the victories were on the track: the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays. In the 4 x 100 it was the team of Brad Bonds, Brian Spindler, Oscar Rauda and Gaige Macomber that ran a 45.37. The Lions are currently second to La Pine in that event in the Sky-Em rankings. In the 4 x 400 it was Bonds, Kendrick Murphy, Conner Richardson and Macomber with the win.

The other Lion wins were by junior Jeff Phemister in the shot put and seniors Nolan Etzel in the discus, Daniel Noll in the javelin and Jordan Yoss in the triple jump.

One other highlight of the meet for the boys was the performance of freshman Kendrick Murphy, who took second in the 400 with a time of 54.78.

The CG girls captured 10 of the 17 events at Junction City. Ahsha Mootz easily won the 100. Kristine Dunn ran her first 400 of the spring and breezed through without any competition in an impressive time of 58.54. Freshman Breanna Wright continues to shine, winning the 800 in a time of 2:29.83.

In the field events it was senior Tricia Ingraham with wins in the shot put and discus, while fellow-senior Katy Bass was also a double-winner in the high jump and long jump.
