A guilty plea on several charges led to life in prison for one suspect in the January, 2012 murder of 48-year old Terry Fruichantie at his London Road Home.

Robert Paul Smith, 35, pleaded guilty March 8 to charges of aggravated murder, five charges of first-degree robbery, one count of first-degree burglary and being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison on those charges, to be served during his life sentence. He also pleaded guilty to six first-degree robbery charges in connection with two armed holdups of a mushroom buying business in 2011. The 22 ½ year sentence will also be served at the time of his life sentence.

At approximately 8:45 p.m. on Jan. 13, 2012, Lane County Sheriff’s deputies, along with Cottage Grove Police, Oregon State Police and South Lane Fire and Rescue personnel, responded to a 911 call from a residence in the 72000 block of London Road in response to the report of a shooting.

Witnesses at the scene indicated that two unknown individuals armed and wearing masks entered the residence and confronted Fruichantie in an apparent robbery attempt.  After a brief altercation, one of the subjects shot Fruichantie.  Both subjects then fled the scene.  Fruichantie was later pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel.
