With one quarter to play last Saturday night, the CGHS girls’ basketball team had high hopes of gaining a berth to the 4A tournament finals in Corvallis this week. The Lions and the Brookings-Harbor Bruins had traded slim leads throughout the first three periods, and the fourth began with Brookings clinging to a 38-37 advantage. Cottage Grove’s reserve guard Kristine Dunn’s lay-in with 11 seconds left made it a one-point game.

The tide appeared to be turning in the Lions’ favor at the beginning of the fourth, despite an injury in the third to starting forward Kaitlyn Erner.  Dunn made another cripple off the press break and was fouled 53 seconds into the fourth quarter. She calmly sank the free throw to put the Lions ahead 40-38. Unfortunately for the CG girls, that was their last lead of the game.
