Homestead Furniture keeps going strong on Main Street

An enterprise that began over four decades ago as one of five furniture stores in a booming lumber town continues today as one of Cottage Grove’s oldest family-run businesses.

These days, Homestead Furniture, located downtown at 615 E. Main St., still features a Scoggin at the helm. The store still frequently acts as a hangout for those seeking a hot cup of coffee and a little gossip, and visitors can still enjoy a shopping experience minus the high-pressure tactics of pushy salesmen. But in its 40-plus year history, much about the business has changed, according to owner Rob Scoggin.

It all started in 1967, according to Scoggin, whose father, Norm, and Chuck Richards opened Piggyback Furniture, a source for used and economical furniture, in the building that currently occupies The Bookmine across Main Street. In 1971, Norm Scoggin, Richards and two other partners took advantage of a building vacancy at the location of the old Peterson’s department store to move across the street to Homestead’s current location.

“When we started, Western Auto was selling furniture, and there was Smith’s Furniture,” Rob Scoggin said. “We were one of five furniture stores in town.”

For Scoggin, the decision to enter the family business was not easy and had to first be weighed against a lucrative job offer in Japan. His wife preferred living in Oregon, though, so after returning from college in 1978, Rob Scoggin joined father Norm at Homestead. Norm Scoggin passed away following a stroke in 2002.
