Girls' hoops faces big tests at home

The difference between last week’s two contests for the Cottage Grove Lions girls’ team compared to this week will probably be like night and day. Last week the CG girls controlled La Pine in their 52-35 win at home, and then they had a walk in the park at Sweet Home, beating the Huskies 80-32.

This week the Lions face Sisters (last night), a team that beat the Lions on the court but forfeited the game to Cottage Grove because of an ineligible player, and then take on Sky-Em leader Junction City, who is undefeated at press time.

In the La Pine game last Tuesday, post players Conner Borigo and Sylvia Dean led the Lions’ scoring with 18 and 11 points respectively. The Hawks’ junior Katie Mickel topped all scorers with 24 points.

At Sweet Home, the Lions tried not to run up the score but still beat the Huskies by 52 points. Borigo made 14 of 22 shots to lead all scorers with 28 points.

“It was just impossible to stop Conner,” said head coach Kerry Clawson. “The ball was going to go inside every time. We knew we were going to win, so we focused on the things we needed to work on to stay sharp. We needed to hold ourselves to a high level of expectation, and I felt the kids did that.”
