The second of a four-week series entitled “Living on the Land” was held for three hours last Wednesday night at Lane Community College in Cottage Grove. The series is a popular one, as evidenced by the fact that a full class of 32 signed up, and others who wanted to be in it had to be turned away.

A big part of the popularity is the subject matter tailored to small acreage owners and to those new at managing land. Affordability and quality of the instruction was another factor. The price for a total of 12 hours of instruction and information during the four weeks was only $20, which included an attractive notebook with the material covered in the class.

The series is sponsored by the Oregon State Extension Service, the City of Cottage Grove and the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council.

The topics covered in the series are: managing soil to keep it productive; surface water, domestic wells, septic systems and watershed restoration; weed control strategies and native plants; and pasture and grazing management.

“I think there is an interest because there are more people living on the land, and people are curious how they can manage it better… what they can do with their land,” said Melissa Fery of the OSU Extension Service. “So, it’s a pretty popular topic.”
