Boys split last-second games

With 7.1 seconds left to play Friday night, the CGHS boys were clinging to a one-point lead over Sweet Home. Would lightning strike twice in one week to crush the Lions?

On Tuesday the Grovers faced the same scenario at La Pine, and the Hawks nailed a three-pointer to win by two.

The Lions seemed to have had the game well in hand, leading 77-68 with two minutes to play, but then the junior sensation Grant Kauffman nailed three straight from beyond the arc. The last one with 14 seconds to play had a degree of difficulty of about 9.5. It tied the game at 83- all. The Lions got the ball into the hands of Jordan Yoss, who drove the hoop and was fouled. Yoss missed the first free throw, but he made the second to give the Lions that one-point lead.

The Huskies made sure they got the ball in the hands of Kauffman, who had already lit up the Lions for an amazing 46 points. Kauffman managed to put up a shot from about 30 feet, being harassed by Cottage Grove’s Brad Miller and Tanner Gates. His final shot hit the rim,but did not fall, and the Lions and their fans breathed a big sigh of relief after a very entertaining game.

“I’m just happy to win a game,” said head coach Donn Pollard. “That was our goal, to win one game.”
