The Mike behind the mike

Posted: Wednesday, Jan 9th, 2013

For anyone attending a Cottage Grove High School boys and girls’ varsity basketball game, it would be difficult to not notice the deep baritone voice of PA announcer Michael Morales. With the rich sound he produces comes a style that Morales has honed over the past four years as the court announcer for Lions basketball and volleyball.

Morales adds a good deal of class to the game atmosphere, and he does it for the love of it, certainly not for any financial benefits.

“It’s my way of giving back to the community for how good they’ve been to us since we’ve been here,” Morales said. "They opened their arms up to me and my family. I love sports, and any way that I can contribute, that’s what I do.”

Morales, his wife Karolina, and their daughter Leah and son Scott, both of whom played basketball for the Lions, came to Cottage Grove from the Los Angeles area four years ago. Morales brought a little of “SoCal” with him, because he freely admits his announcing style is patterned closely after Lawrence Tanter, the PA announcer for the Los Angeles Lakers for the past 30 years.

Tanter has been described as the man with “the trombone voice.” One of the unique phrases Tanter uses to describe a traveling violation is “too many steps.” Morales has no qualms about copying Tanter.
