Dental clinic started for underserved youth
Extensive planning and cooperation between Cottage Grove’s dental and school communities led to the founding this year of a dental clinic at Lane Community College’s Cottage Grove campus. Collaborators with South Lane School District, LCC, the Cottage Grove Community Foundation, Oregon Community Foundation and others teamed up to fund and build the $225,000 clinic in seven days. The facility was designed to tend to the needs of underserved youth in the community, for which dental problems can be a barrier to learning.
A ribbon cutting was held to open the clinic on Sept. 10, a day South Lane Superintendent Krista Parent called “a great day for Cottage Grove kids and families.” The clinic operates through the volunteer efforts of local dentists Park and Tammy McClung, Jonathan Backer, Doug Maddess and Brent Bitner and their respective staffs.
