The Cottage Grove boys’ basketball team entered last week with a 1-2 record and facing a schedule with four games in five days. It was an opportunity to get on a winning track, and for the most part they did.

Last Tuesday evening (Dec. 11) the Lion boys clobbered North Marion 89-36. The Grovers built up an incredible 33-9 first quarter lead against the over-matched Huskies.

Jordan Yoss led all scorers with 26 points. Next in line for scoring were Mason Mueller (12), and Garrett Boyce, Brad Miller and John Schatzau each with 11 points.

The annual Cottage Grove/ Junction City Tournament began on Thursday night, and the Lions got to play all three games on their home court. There was no contest in the first-round game with Ontario. It was almost a carbon copy of the North Marion game with the Grovers prevailing 88-39. The CG boys led 43-14 at the half thanks to a 3-pointer by Brody Gipson just before the buzzer.

Yoss scored 21 points to lead the Lions, all of them coming in the first half. He had 14 in the first quarter and was almost perfect from beyond the arc, nailing five 3-pointers. Yoss wasn’t the only one who was hot. Garrett Boyce knocked down three 3-pointers as did Gipson. All told, the Lions made 12 shots beyond the arc. Senior Mason Mueller added 13 points from the inside to balance out the attack.
