Christmas barreled full-tilt into Cottage Grove on Saturday, and the festivities made it apparent that locals were not prepared to let the rain dampen their spirit.

For many, the day began with the running (or walking) of the annual Jingle Bell Run. About 60 souls braved the wet weather to undertake the five-kilometer course beginning at Cottage Grove High School (see story on page 11A.)

Holiday shopping was on the list of many for Saturday, and holiday bazaars held at the Dr. Snapp House by the Prospectors and Golddiggers and at the Opal Center for Arts and Education offered homespun gift options. The Santa Sprint (see story, page 3A) also attracted runners hoping for glory to Anytime Fitness.

Perhaps the centerpiece of the weekend, the lighting of the downtown Christmas Tree, drew a large crowd (at least considering the weather) to Trailhead Park. As ever, Santa Claus arrived atop a firetruck to the tune of Jingle Bells and the clanging of keys provided by the gathered crowd.
