For those who have been around Cottage Grove for a long time, it may be old news, but the new mayor-elect, Tom Munroe, is a Grover from way back, and he has a sports background.
Munroe grew up in the Dorena area and played football and competed in track for CGHS in the mid-1950s. One of his best memories came in the fall of 1955 when he was a 5-foot, 7-inch, 150-pound sophomore. Munroe was on the junior varsity and in the third game of the season, the Lions’ JV team played Willamette High School’s varsity at Cottage Grove’s Currin Field. Willamette’s student body was then a lot smaller than it is today.
