Spending the night in the hospital is a daunting experience, especially for a youngster, though a touch of home provided by a mother-daughter team in Cottage Grove may make overnight stays a little less difficult.

Cheryl Bord said a revelation during a difficult time helped her start “Pillowgrams,” a project that has led to the creation of 353 new pillowcases so far this year for any child who spends the night at Sacred Heart Medical Center-RiverBend.

“My mom used to make pillowcases for all her grandkids,” Bord said. “She passed away from pancreatic cancer. One day, I was having a bad moment, and I picked up a magazine, and there was an article about making pillowcases for children in hospitals. It was like it was my calling.”
