These days, an international movement is underway to provide cleaner-burning, more efficient cookstoves to the developing world. It’s a movement that has found a measure of its momentum in Cottage Grove, where Aprovecho Research Center, a stove lab and testing facility, and its offshoot organizations are handing down knowledge they’ve developed over decades.

This week, Aprovecho Director Dean Still announced that the research center is busy in the second week of a six-week training program that aims to educate its trainees in methods for building and improving stoves, knowledge that they will in turn take back to their home countries. Their efforts will combine with others working on behalf of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, which hopes to set up nine regional stove-testing facilities worldwide in the near future.

“It’s everything about making better stoves,” Still said. “Their job is to test stoves in their area, to help manufacture and make better stoves.”
