Beginning with its first possession, it became evident the only team that was going to stop the CGHS varsity football team was itself in its play-in game against Mazama Friday night. The outcome of the game was never really in doubt after the Lions’ quick-strike offense scored on its first possession. The final score was 41-8, which earned the Grovers a first-round playoff game with Baker at Baker City at 1 p.m. this Saturday.
To open the game, the Lions stopped Mazama and then Scotty Hitner connected with Oscar Rauda for 21 yards. On a third-and-9, Hitner hit Brad Bonds for 12 yards and a first down. A short pass to Brian Spindler put the Lions ahead for good at 7-0 with less than three minutes having expired on the clock. The Grovers then stopped themselves with some bad snaps from center, but Mazama couldn’t move the ball on the Lions’ quick defense.
