Dr. Mike Thompson (1986-99): 'He did everything' Former CGHS coach Bob Heckman

Posted: Tuesday, Apr 30th, 2013

Dr. Mike Thompson served for the love of kids and sports.

When the Cottage Grove High School Hall of Fame committee came up with the category of “community contributor,” they may not have had Dr. Mike Thompson specifically in mind, but Thompson certainly fits the bill. The community contributor is a person or entity that selflessly has given of their time and resources to make a strong, positive impact upon CGHS athletics.

Thompson was a family practice doctor in Cottage Grove, and he decided to help out with the Lions’ sports programs when his children, Ryan, Sarah and Sam began playing high school sports.

“I grew up in a small town in Montana (Absarokee), and I loved football,” Thompson said. “Besides, I loved helping kids and got to be where my own were playing.”

Thompson became the football team doctor in 1985 and was a familiar face on the sidelines for about 14 years. Much of it was when Bob Heckman was the head football coach.

“As coaches, we really don’t know how those guys are going to work out,” Heckman reflected. “Sometimes they’re really good and sometimes they’re really bad. Mike was the humblest… you rarely knew that he was even there he was so quiet, but everything got done.”

Heckman recalls Thompson’s humility was displayed in various ways.

“Here’s a doctor, a leader in the community, and he’s carrying bags, he’s packing gear, he’s sweeping the floor, he’s wiping up with towels… he did everything.”

Heckman said in addition to taking care of the players he would help equipment manager Don King, who struggled with health issues.
