Not to be out-Dunn

Posted: Tuesday, Apr 23rd, 2013

Photo by Jerry Thompson Kristine Dunn looked at the Hayward Field clock as she crossed the finish line ahead of the other high school girls runners at the Oregon Relays on Saturday. Dunn's time of 56.92 is the best time in the 400 by any high school girl in Oregon so far this spring.

It had been almost two years since Cottage Grove’s Kristine Dunn had run under 58 seconds in the 400 meters. Saturday at Hayward Field in Eugene, the conditions were ideal at the Oregon Relays for her to challenge her school record of 57.78, which she set as a sophomore. Dunn took even a bigger step forward by not only winning the high school girls’ 400 meter runbut coming in under 57 seconds at 56.92.

“I’m so happy,” Dunn exclaimed moments after the race. “I’ve been stuck on 58 for awhile. It’s really good to finally move forward. It shows that working hard in practice is really helping me a lot, so it just gives me a reason to keep working harder.”

Dunn was one of a select few high school girls invited to the annual Oregon Relays, and she did not disappoint. Dunn beat Shayee Swaine from Coronado High School in Nevada, who had run a 57.60 this spring, as well as Chiara Chandlee of St. Mary’s Academy near Portland.
