Diamond teams savor first wins

Posted: Wednesday, Mar 27th, 2013

A double by Elysha Lang (top) and Aaron Bloom's triple sparked Lions' first wins.

After the Cottage Grove varsity softball and baseball teams began the season with 14-2 and 13-1 losses respectively, the hopes were things couldn’t get much worse. Fortunately that wish turned out to be true as both teams have steadily improved. Last week both teams also picked up their first wins of the season in close contests.

Coming off a good weekend outing at Crater two weeks ago, the Lion girls hosted Philomath. Going into the bottom of the sixth, the CG girls were clinging to a 2-1 lead. Jordan Ortloff led off by reaching first base with a hard-hit ball to third. Both Taylor Sayles and Jenna Borrelli then bunted safely to load the bases. Senior Elysha Lang responded with the biggest hit of the early season, sending a line drive over the Warrior’s center fielder for a stand-up double. It drove in two runs to give the Lions a 4-1 lead.

Sayles gave up two hits and struck out seven Philomath batters to gain the win. Liz Wiltse continued her hitting streak with two singles and an RBI.

The girls traveled to North Bend last Thursday and were edged 7-5 by the Bulldogs. Jenna Borrelli, Jordan Ortloff, Courtney Shipley and Amanda Anderson all went 2-for-4 for the Lions.

After losses to South Umpqua, Douglas, Marshfield, Siuslaw and Woodburn to open the season, the Cottage Grove Lions were due for a victory. The boys dropped the first game of a doubleheader to Woodburn by a score of 12-5. The Grovers gave up seven walks and committed five errors in the defeat. Tristin Mihan had two hits to lead the Lions.
