Lion gridders pursuing their Aloha goal

Posted: Tuesday, Mar 12th, 2013

The Cottage Grove H.S. football team plans on staying at the Banyan Harbor Resort in Lihue, Kauai for six days during its trip to Hawaii at the end of August.

Itís more than five months until the Cottage Grove Lions play their first football game, but the players are getting excited already, and a lot of it has nothing to do with the game itself.

Last year the Lions opened the season with a trip to Wildlife Safari country to take on the Douglas Trojans. In 2013 they plan on traveling a little further than the 57 miles to WinstonÖabout 3100 miles one way, to be specific.

The Lions are scheduled to play the Kauai High School Red Raiders on the Island of Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands on Friday, Aug. 30.

Currently the plan is for 32 players and seven coaches to make the trip, along with a group of about 20 parents. The team will be spending the five days prior to the game touring the island and taking in every moment of what might be for some a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Head coach Gary Roberts said the South Lane School Board recently approved the excursion. There will be no funding provided by the school district or CGHS, so the players and coaches need to raise a total of about $52,000 to pay for the trip.
