The youth movement in track is also happening in baseball and softball this season. In softball, last week new head coach Earl Hinkle welcomed 29 girls, and he reported that 20 of them are underclassmen. Four of them (Conner Borigo, Jenna Borrelli, Taylor Sayles and Liz Wiltse) started as freshmen. Junior Courtney Shipley and seniors Ashley Portier and Elysha Lang are also back.
It appears that at least seven of the starting nine should be very experienced. Hinkle is inheriting a team that did finish fourth and played one postseason game. So, the 2013 edition of Lions softball has a good foundation and should again be competing in the Sky-Em for a playoff berth.
In baseball, the scenario is pretty similar to softball in terms of numbers and experience. As of last week, there was only one senior (Aaron Bloom) that was practicing with the team. He is joined by juniors Kwan Thithong, Brody Gipson, Quentin Buckland and Bodey Allen. Head coach Dan Geiszler praised Thithong and Allen for how dedicated they have been in working on their game in the offseason. Gipson, who played both JV and varsity basketball, should contribute at shortstop and on the mound. For the complete article see the 03-06-2013 issue.
