Forfeit helps girls' hoops split

Posted: Wednesday, Jan 30th, 2013

Junior Kaitlyn Erner made this shot at the end of the first half to put the Lions ahead of Junction City by a score of 16-15.

The Cottage Grove Lions girls’ basketball team knew it was going to be a tough week with games on the road against the Sky-Em league leaders, Sisters and Junction City. The girls played at Sisters on Tuesday (Jan. 25) and lost the game but got a reprieve, so to speak. It was determined that Sisters needed to forfeit the game because of a player who was declared ineligible for part of the season.

Here is Cottage Grove athletic director, Dave Presley’s explanation of the situation:

“Due to a late discovery of a varsity female basketball athlete transfer from Redmond H.S. to Sisters H.S., Sisters has been made by the OSAA to forfeit almost all of their games, so they are now winless in league.

The young lady is a good softball player and attended a softball camp over the summer that happened to have the Sisters JV softball coach as one of the clinicians at the camp. With the parents being dissatisfied with the Redmond school district and having another daughter that was going to be a freshmen starting her high school experience, they decided to pull their oldest daughter out of Redmond and transfer during the summer to Sisters, where their youngest could start her high school experience.
