Going into last week’s two games, the Cottage Grove Lions boys’ basketball team had a 7-5 non-league record and was aiming to upset undefeated Cascade and open the Sky-Em schedule with a win over Elmira. The Lions had played both teams in mid-December at home in the Junction City/Cottage Grove Tournament.
The CG boys handled Elmira relatively easily in a 63-52 victory on Dec. 14, and the next day shot poorly in a 54-44 loss to Cascade. So, on Tuesday (Jan. 8) the Lions were hoping to sweep the week by redeeming themselves against the Cougars and repeating their performance against the Falcons. Neither happened in two games that were very much winnable. It was a closer contest, but Cascade prevailed 49-42, and Elmira won a thriller in two overtimes by a score of 66-64.
In the loss to Cascade, again it was another case of cold shooting that thwarted the Lions. The game didn’t begin that way, as Cottage Grove began strongly, jumping to a 6-0 lead and ended the first quarter ahead 19-10. Jordan Yoss had six points, Garett Boyce connected on a three and Garrison King returned to action and provided some valuable minutes.
The game tightened up in the second period, but the CG boys still led by four at the half. It was the second half where the Lions went cold. They scored only six points in the third quarter, while the Cougars added 10 to knot the game at 36 going into the fourth. For the complete article see the 01-16-2013 issue.
