With 3.50 left in the game Saturday at Churchill High School, the Cottage Grove Lion girls’ had cut a 12-point deficit (43-31) to just two points (43-41). The Lancer coach called time out, and out of the break, Churchill nailed a 3-pointer to put the Lancers up by five, and it never got closer. The Lions scored only two more points, while Churchill added seven more to win going away, 53-45.

“We dug ourselves in an early hole, and we spent the whole game trying to crawl out of it,” said CG head coach Kerry Clawson. “That (3-pointer) made it tough.”

Clawson pointed to a couple of other reasons that kept the 4A CG girls from overcoming the 5A Lancers in the season opener. One was the Lions made only 12 of 29 free throws.

“They did a good job with their post defense,” said Clawson. “We went with one post because I think we’re faster that way, and maybe in retrospect we need to go with two posts. We didn’t get the kind of production out of the post spot that we wanted (10 points combined from three players) and we didn’t also get the turnovers we hoped we’d get in the press. So, you add all those factors together, and suddenly you’re in a hole and your trying to scramble out.”
