The love of the sport may be the main attraction for kids turning out for wrestling, but it doesn’t hurt to have two CGHS Hall of Famers in charge as well as two recent state champions guiding the youngsters.
Cottage Grove High head coach Bill Thompson expects about 150-160 young men and women out for wrestling this winter, counting the high school, middle school and club teams.
About 40-45 should compete for the Lions high school team, a similar number for middle school, and about 40 kindergarten through third grade and 40 for fourth through eighth grades.
Every Tuesday and Thursday night from 5:30 to 6:30 the high school wrestling room will be open free of charge for the K-8 graders.
Besides Thompson, who is in the CGHS Hall of Fame as a coach, Jesse Meyer, who was honored in the hall as a wrestler, has moved back to the area, and he, along with Chris Seiffert, will run the club wrestling. For the complete article see the 11-28-2012 issue.
