Thomas “Tom” Taylor, 67, of Cottage Grove passed away May 16, 2014.
He was born Jan. 5, 1947 in Evanston, Ill. to Thomas and Jeanne (Erickson) Taylor.
He served six years in the U.S. Navy and was in both Okinawa and Puerto Rico in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Following that, he was in the Minnesota National Guard for six years.
On Sept. 1, 1971 in Freedhem, Minn., he and Janet Warnke were married.
Tom worked for Lane Community College for 28 years and always thought of his job not in terms of the details of the job description, but as a simple goal: “I make people happy.” He also worked for Minnesota Power and Light, operating a hydroelectric dam on the Mississippi River, and for the Burroughs Corporation in Minneapolis, Minn.
Tom enjoyed working in his wood shop, making a wide variety of gadgets and gizmos. As a child, he was a model railroading enthusiast, and his interest continued throughout his life in his hobby of creating miniatures.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Taylor of Cottage Grove; his mother, Jeanne Taylor; two daughters, Sarah Hampton and husband, Steve, of Springfield and Paula Taylor of Cottage Grove; two sons, Seth Taylor and wife, Kayann, of Houghton, N.Y., and Nathan Taylor of Cottage Grove; two sisters, Barbara Shands and Diane DeBlasio, both of Union Hall, Va., a brother, Barry Taylor of Waucanda, Ill, and five grandchildren.
No service is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tom’s favorite charity, the Disabled American Veterans.
Arrangements under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel, Cottage Grove.
