Lyelle Hathaway, 75, was born in Tillamook, Oregon on Sept. 11, 1937 to Isabel and Gene Hathaway.
Lyelle grew up in St. Johns, Portland, Salem, Dillard, Crawfordsville, and graduated high school in Sweet Home. He joined the Navy in 1956 and served on transports and the Destroyer USS Bausel. While serving, he met Elizabeth Swiatly, and they married shortly after he was honorably discharged.
Lyelle worked in the banking industry for over 30 years. He joined U.S. National Bank after he moved back to Oregon, starting in Corvallis where his two sons, Daniel Gene and Antoni Francis, were born. Later, he worked for the Cottage Grove branch as assistant manager and then manager several years later. In the mid 70s, he married Ellen (Skelton) Stallings, who brought her daughter Melissa into the family.
Lyelle and Ellen decided to move to Springfield after a transfer to the Springfield branch. Unfortunately, Ellen passed away shortly before the move. He resided there until his death.
Lyelle was civically active with the Rotary in Cottage Grove and Springfield, St. Vincent De Paul and other civic organizations. He loved traveling, family history, Oregon history and the Oregon coast. Lyelle was proud of his red 1960 Cadillac convertible that he owned for several decades, his garden (especially his roses), and he took great delight in his many grandchildren. He made many friends wherever he went and always had many entertaining stories to tell.
Lyelle was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ellen.
Survivors include his sister, Jean Anne; two sons, Daniel Gene and Antoni Francis, and their mother, Elizabeth; stepdaughter Melissa; stepson Jeff and six grandchildren.
There will be a small gathering of family and friends at Shore Acres State Park on Aug. 24. It was a place that Lyelle loved to go no matter the time of year or weather. Contact Dan at 541-347-2935 for more information.
