Roger Lee Schmale, 67, passed away Aug. 1, 2013 of a heart attack.
He was born in North Bend to Harold and Beatrice (Davis) Schmale on Nov. 6, 1945. The family moved to the Eugene area in 1946. Roger graduated from North Eugene High School in 1963, went into the Coast Guard, and then went on to attend the University of Oregon. He was always proud of his Coast Guard service. Roger worked in the sale of food and equipment supplies to restaurants, health care facilities, and school districts.
In 1977, he met his soul mate, Linda Ihrig. After only six weeks, he asked her to marry him. They celebrated their 35th anniversary this past April.
Roger was an avid Duck fan, and according to his wife, Linda, “He even quacked in his sleep!” He loved to fish, travel and attend Duck football and track events.
His family was the most important thing to him. He always had a smile and a joke (some of them were even funny) for his friends and family. He never met a stranger. Those whose lives he touched will never be the same. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Linda Schmale; sons Ronald Porter and Roger Porter of Lake Havasu, Arizona; brother Don (Carol) Schmale and sister-in-law Twila Schmale, all of Eugene; daughter Tanya Lamm Adams (Chuck) of Veneta; two grandchildren and several nephews, nieces and numerous friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Beatrice Schmale, and by his brother, Ronald Schmale on July 25, 2013.
There will be a memorial service at Smith-Lund-Mills Chapel in Cottage Grove on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in his name to the Cottage Grove-area Habitat for Humanity.
