Incumbent Stewart still narrowly avoiding
The waiting game continues for two candidates for the East Lane seat on Lane County’s Board of Commissioners.
Incumbent Faye Stewart, who fought for reelection in the Tuesday, May 20 primary against four candidates, said Monday that he’s been informed by Lane County officials not to expect an update on the extremely close race for the East Lane seat until the election is certified by Lane County clerk Cheryl Betschart on Monday, June 9. Currently, Stewart reportedly has 13 more than the 50 percent plus one vote threshold he would need to win the seat outright and avoid a runoff with his nearest competitor, Kevin Matthews, in November.
Stewart said he has been informed that ballots coming in from outside Lane County are still being counted, though election officials will not say how many ballots still must be tallied. An automatic recount will happen at public expense if the victor receives 50.002 percent or less of the vote, though a candidate could pay for a recount and then be reimbursed for the expense if the recount changes the election results.
“There’s been nothing concrete since Tuesday, so we’ll just have to wait and see,” Stewart said. For the complete article see the 05-28-2014 issue.
