Disc golf tourney packs North Regional course, Middlefield

As is typical on a sunny spring Sunday morning, there was a lot of action on Middlefield Golf Course: the golf carts were scooting around the course while other players were carrying their bags and rolling their carts. Cheers over good shots and grimaces on close misses were expressed. However, there was one big difference in the game. Instead of seeing little white balls soar through the air, the sky was filled with small, flying discs.

No, it was not a UFO convention, it was the second leg of Cottage Grove’s two-day disc golf tournament.

A total of 76 disc golfers (about 45 amateurs and 30 professionals) representing five states competed Saturday on the North Regional Park disc golf course and Sunday at Middlefield.

There couldn’t have been a much larger contrast in courses. The length is just one of the differences. The North Regional Park course is a 6500-foot par 61, while the Middlefield course is 11,340-feet with par set at 70. The buckets or holes were placed near the golf greens but never on them.

“The course yesterday (Regional Park) is heavily wooded with lots of blackberries,” said Warren Hollinshead, the tournament director.

“The Regional course was very challenging,” added Bend’s Torrey Tuft. “It was laid out especially long and difficult. It got me. All of us love the ball golf course (Middlefield). The length of the holes and the open, beautifully manicured terrain…it’s amazing to get a chance to play out here. I’d love to see it go permanent.”
