In a dead heat!

Posted: Tuesday, Jun 25th, 2013

Spectators urge on a pair of dashing Dachshunds at the Cottage Grove Board of Realtors' sixth annual Wiener Dog Races and Pet Fest Saturday. The event included a pet look-alike contest, talent and costume contests and benefited the CG Kids Club and South Lane Children's Dental Clinic. More photos of the event can be found on page 11A.

The portable grandstands at Coiner Park were full of spectators Saturday afternoon who were anxiously waiting for the annual wiener dog races. It again proved to be a very entertaining event, but with the sun blaring down on the stands combined with the unusual humidity, unfortunately by the time all the heats were run, the “heat” got to many of the fans. After about 20 heats, the stands were mostly empty when the championship competition began at about 3:30 p.m.

Over 60 wiener dogs were entered in the races, and when it was all over, Brigette Brinks’ little “Harley” braved all the heats and temperature to win the grand finale. Second place was earned by “Kittie," owned by Kaitlin McKennon.

In addition to the featured races, there was a dog/master look-a-like contest, a dog talent show, which was won by Joanna Long’s German Shepherd mix “Snoozie,” an all-dog race won by “Bentley” and a police dog “stay and attack” demonstration conducted by officer Chris Joyce.

The event was emceed by Shane May and Keith Kessler, and the proceeds go to the CG Kids Club and the South Lane Children’s Dental Clinic.
