Koyano graces 'high expectations' poster

It seems they found the perfect poster child.

Recently, the Oregon Council on Developmental Disabilities, the ARC Oregon and the DHS Office of Developmental Disability Services held an event to commemorate and close out the month of March as Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. On March 29, the Department of Human Services unveiled its 2013 awareness poster, meant to illustrate the theme of “high expectations.” The poster featured Cottage Grove’s own Carly Koyano, a three-year old with Downs Syndrome who is treated no differently by her parents than their other four children.

“The theme was ironic because we’ve always had high expectations for Carly,” said her father, Derrik Koyano. “Even though she has Downs, it’s not a crutch. We expect the same from her as we would from our other children.”

Recently, the Koyanos were approached by Arc of Lane County, which “advocates to enhance the dignity, expand the opportunities, and protect the rights of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families,” according to its website.
