Raves for Maeve, or…The Star-Spangled girl

At Cottage Grove varsity basketball games this season, invariably the loudest ovation of the night was not given to what a player did on the court, but to the 14-year old CGHS freshman who belted out the National Anthem before the game began.

Lions fans have grown accustomed to Maeve Dahlen’s impressive rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner, so the applause and cheers of the Lion fans were often joined with at least an equal degree of enthusiasm by the opposing fans and players who heard her for the first time.

This winter and spring Dahlen has branched out by performing the National Anthem at University of Oregon sporting events. She has sung at Matt Knight Arena, Hayward Field and PK Park.

“I definitely enjoy it,” said Dahlen. “It’s really fun. I can’t really imagine how my life would be without singing. It’s really scary, but it’s almost like an adrenaline rush.”

Although sporting events have become her staple, her biggest “rush” came two years ago when she sang John Lennon’s “Imagine,” as well as five other classics, for the Princess of Denmark at the opening of a new animal park in Indonesia.
