Crash claims man lauded as recycling pioneer

Friends and family members are mourning the loss of a local man who perished in a single-vehicle crash on Blue Mountain School Road last week, a man lauded by many as a pioneer of the recycling movement.

At 6:20 p.m. Thursday, personnel with South Lane County Fire & Rescue responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash at Milepost 3 of Blue Mountain School Road. There they discovered a full-size Ford pickup wedged between two trees that had sustained a heavy impact. The driver, later identified as 68-year old Paul Douglas “Doug” Howell of Cottage Grove, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Captain Joe Raade of SLCF&R surmised that a medical condition may have led to the crash, though an investigation into its cause continues. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor, Raade said.

On Monday, Howell’s son, Ben Howell, spoke of his father’s life’s work.

“To his dying day, he was recycling,” the younger Howell said. Many longtime residents may recall Howell’s work to establish his salvage business, Doug Howell Enterprises, which began in 1973. They may also remember the buildings that he helped dismantle, buildings whose components were later reused in a manner uncommon for the time period.

“He was known for the Mosby Creek salvage yard he founded,” Howell said. “Before thee was a Bring Recycling, there was my father. In those days, not many people were recycling metals. They would just throw everything in a trash can, and it would end up in Short Mountain. He truly was one of the pioneers of recycling in the region.”
