For most of her young life, four-year old Fela Colbert has been a fixture in a small, tight-knit community in Cottage Grove. Now, after two weeks without a word about Fela’s whereabouts, her father, Steve Colbert, hopes his daughter’s relationship with this community can one day continue.

Colbert said he last saw his daughter on Jan. 27 when he dropped her off at the Eugene Public Library to stay with her mother, Deanna Lane. Lane has been granted sole custody of Fela by the Oregon courts, Colbert said, though they’ve worked to adapt to a joint parenting situation since splitting up in January of 2010. Fela and her mother were due to meet Colbert at the Eugene Library again on Feb. 3, he said, but neither showed up.

Since that moment, Colbert said he’s taken to social media and entreated law enforcement to help in his search for Fela, though information has been difficult to come by. Colbert said he immediately phoned the police when his daughter didn’t arrive. The police contacted Lane’s landlord, he said, who had been seen by a neighbor leaving her Eugene home on foot carrying one suitcase. Colbert said the courts have ordered that he have a chance to speak with Fela while she is in her mother’s custody, but calls to Lane have repeatedly gone straight to her voicemail.

Colbert said he and Lane lived in Cottage Grove since before Fela was born, and he is still proud to call this place home.
